MADELEINE
CHURCH
Located close to Place de
la
Concorde
, in a high standing commercial
zone (next to the street of Faubourg Saint-Honoré, one of the
most fashionable and glamorous streets of
Paris
),
Madeleine Church will attract our attention with its architecture
in form of the classical Greek temple.
The construction began around 1764 by Contant d´Ivry, soon being
reconstructed with planes of Guillaume Couture in 1777.
Because of the French Revolution, works were interrupted
from 1790 to 1805. In
1806 the Madeleine was transformed into the
Temple
consecrated to the Great Navy. It maintained this function until
the Arc of the Triumph was built. In 1842 it returned to be a
catholic church, remaining as, until today
It’s
hard to believe that Madeleine is representing a western church
type. A by-chance visitor could be misleading with its Greek style
until he would not enter and discover its interior.
As
its interior are not so interesting as in the outside, it’s
worth to climb up the stairs to be rewarded by a splendid view to
the Rue Royal with Place de
la Concorde
with its Obelisque. Surely an unforgettable image.
